The Worm Farm Starter Kit in Action

Composting worms are uniquely adapted to thrive in decaying organic matter, and they have bigĀ  appetites for everything from apples, banana peels, coffee grounds, cardboard, and more!

Earthworm’s obtain nutrition from decomposing organic matter, so their gut has been designed to hyper-accelerate decomposition, rapidly converting organic waste into stable, nutrient-packed fertilizer we call worm castings as quickly as it takes to get from one end of the worm to the other!

Our Starter Kit includes the Worms, the Urban Worm Bag, and Bedding to get started!

  • Urban Worm Bag

    The Urban Worm Bag

The Urban Worm Bag is the best home vermicomposter available. It's about 2'x2' giving you more space than other composting systems, is built out a breathable fabric to keep the worm bin healthy, zips fully closed to block access to insects, and makes harvesting easy with its flow through design.

  • The Composting Worms

Our pure red wiggler composting worms are the best option for the Urban Worm Bag. Red Wigglers are generally accepted as the easiest worm for vermicomposting, but are especially suitable for continuous flow through systems like the Urban Worm Bag as they like to stay by the top of the bin - away from where you harvest on the bottom.

  • Box of Urban Worm Coco Coir with a pile of brown coco coir on a white background

    The Worm Bedding

Coco Coir is a proven, eco-friendly worm bedding and soil amendment made from coconut husks.

Step 1

Assemble the Worm Farm

The Urban Worm Bag is built with easy connect tubing - one person can set it up in about 10 minutes.

Step 2

Hydrate Your Worm Bedding

The coco coir comes with a bag to pour water in directly. Add 3/4 gallon, or about 6.5 pounds, with each block for a perfect moisture level. Then add it to the Urban Worm Bag!

Step 3

Add Your Red Wigglers

Dump out the worms onto the coco coir in the Urban Worm Bag and watch them burrow into their new home!

Step 4

Add Your Food Waste!

You can add a small amount of food waste right away. A couple cups of chopped up fruit or vegetable scraps, or coffee grounds will be a great welcome home meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can worms eat?

Worms eat any organic waste such as fruit and vegetable waste, paper and cardboard waste, coffee grounds and eggshells, but its best to avoid citrus, dairy, meat, or spicy foods.

How fast do worms eat?

There are a lot of variables, so a very ballpark answer is each pound of worms can eat 3-4 pounds per week.

Do worm bins smell?

Bad smells is a sign you are doing something wrong! A healthy worm farm is odorless, or smells slightly like a forest.

How fast do red wigglers reproduce?

In typical conditions, you can expect a well taken care of worm colony to double every 2-3 months, but in truly perfect conditions they can multiply their population by 9x every week!

What do I do with the worms when they arrive?

Get to work naming them all! After, you can place the worms in your worm bin and leave a soft light over them. They should dive in within 30-60 minutes. If they are trying to escape, give me a call and we'll troubleshoot!

How do I keep worms happy?

Keeping your bins moisture levels balanced is the most important single thing. Moistened, but not wet, worm bedding will keep them happy and prevent most, if not all, issues in the worm bin.

What temperature is best for red wigglers?

77°F is their ideal temperature, between 60-80°F is just fine, but they will die below 32°F and above 95°F.

Can they survive winter?

Unlike the other worms in "red worm mixes," pure red wigglers can survive winter! Worst case scenario if the worms die, their cocoons will hatch the next spring.

How do you know your worms are pure?

Our worms are raised in an indoor facility in mortar tray tubs and our population is self sustaining.

How many worms are in a pound?

We aim to send breeder age worms, which are typically around 800 to the pound, but sometimes send smaller worms that could be as many as 1500 to the pound.

How long have you been in business?

I started as a hobby in 2014, and began the business in 2019. Over the years I have raised and shipped millions of worms, mostly providing white-label shipments for other businesses.

How are the worms shipped?

We package them with a lot of dry peat moss to help them survive shipment. Dry peat acts as insulation from temperature extremes. They are then placed in breathable bags that we tie closed and place in the shipping box.

How successfully do worms survive the mail?

Better than you think! We've perfected the art after 4+ years of shipping worms. We need cooperation from you, and sometimes accidents just happen, but we have about a 98% success rate.

When do you ship and how long does it take?

We take orders until Friday and ship the next monday or tuesday. If the weather is too hot or too cold for us to feel comfortable shipping the worms we will delay the shipment and inform you.

What if I won't be home to take delivery?

If you request that the shipment be held at the post office for you to pick up, we will guarantee live delivery as long as you pick them up that same day.

What are worm castings?

Worm castings is worm poop! Nature's own plant food. Yummy!

Are worm castings a good fertilizer?

Yes! Worm castings are full of plant available nutrition, plant growth hormones, organic matter, and millions of beneficial microorganisms to help your soil ecosystem.

How long until I can harvest the castings?

Depending on how well you take care of your worms, how many you start with, and what you feed them, anywhere from 2-6 months.

Customer photo review of Red Wigglers Composting Worms

Thank you Hungry Worms for the opportunity to teach and learn more about composting. We hosted 8 "Worm Wednesdays" programs this summer with good attendance of about 35 kids, ages 5 and up. We partnered with our local Master Gardeners who helped teach the classes. Students looked forward every week to seeing, examine, feeding and touch the worms. 3 families started their own composting bins. The Master Gardeners is going to start a Compost Program with our worms called The Traveling Worm Company where they will be going into schools with the travel bin. They will be teaching in preschools, homeschool groups and high schools.

My worms arrived intact and VERY VERY good health. Over 90% were fully grown breeding age adult worms and the total weight WELL exceeded what I ordered. Scott is the BEST in the business as far as quality and customer support. Always willing and happy to take my calls and return my texts, even though its only to talk about worms because I've not had ANY support related issues. Thanks again Scott!!! Keep up the good work 🪱😁🪱

So this is how live animals should be packaged and shipped. I was a little worried that they were packaged on a Monday and shipped on a Tuesday and arrived the following Monday. A lot of travel for the wormmies. They arrived in amazing condition. Couldn’t ask for healthier worms. There is so much care in the packaging it is awesome. Thank you so much. I will be purchasing again and would recommend anybody else to also. Great job

Scott is an amazing seller and very knowledgeable. He really took the time to explain everything step by step especially for a ā€œnoobā€. There’s a lot of worm sellers out there but Scott went above and beyond normal customer service. Scott is the only worm seller I’ll buy from.

Worms arrived earlier than expected. Not 1 single dead worm, none had escaped their bag, they were all very healthy and mostly all fully grown adult worms. Customer service has been beyond great. No issues with my order but Scott has been a great help to me and my worm farm. The worms settled right in and were breeding and eating by day 2. Highly recommend Hungry Worms for all your worm needs. Thank you Scott!!!

Customer photo review of MazuriĀ® Earthworm Feed

Scott is a wonderful businessman who genuinely cares about his customers and it showed when he emailed and texted me about my order. He took time out of his day to correspond about worm stuff unrelated about my order. And said if there were any questions or concerns to reach out anytime. Part of my order shipped fast and so did the ANC’s. Expect the ANC’s got held up a couple of days in transit due to the severe thunderstorms going on in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The ANC’s arrived alive but a little worm out from the trip. Once they were in the bin they tried to escape at first but quickly settled in. The are very happy in their new home. Thank you.

Customer photo review of African Nightcrawlers

I will certainly say that the quality, amount, and size of the worms in the package has been excellent and is not reflected well in the pictures because these guys are very elusive when you put them in the bin. On a personal level specific to this species overall, the learning curve is more steep with African nightcrawlers and they are more frustrating and temperamental than red wigglers.

African Nightcrawlers

Customer photo review of Red Wigglers Composting Worms

There was a lot of care put into packaging given how vigorous and pure the red wigglers appeared. Other vendors seem to have other species mixed in but not that I noticed here. They settled in very well and quickly in the bin. Highly recommended!

Customer photo review of Red Wigglers Composting Worms

I put 2/3s of the worms in my breeder bin - that's the flat one with just a few on top, today is feeding day and then they're all over the top. The other 1/3 I put in the top of the 5 tray tower. That will be the grow out bin. I disturbed the feed zone so you could see they're doing well. Worms arrived great and have been healthy and happy little buggers. It's my first time doing this and I was very pleased with the product AND the customer service from Scott who went above and beyond with an actual phone call when there was a shipping issue with one item.

Red Wigglers Composting Worms

Customer photo review of Red Wigglers Composting Worms

The worms arrived as promised and in perfect condition. A little weary from the trip but all alive. They were packed in peatmoss in a breatherable bag and then in a cardboard box with holes. Im sorry I didn't take a picture before I put them into my worm bin but I had to rush back to work. They adjusted right away to their new home and are doing great.. Scott reached out to make sure all was well, I did not expect that at all. My previous worm purchase from another seller did not go well. Hungry worms is definately my go to supplier from now on. Don't hesitate to buy yours from Scott. He does a superior job and really cares.

I've bought worms from several places before, and I've never seen them arrive as healthy-looking as these. Even though they were in dry peat moss, their skins were moist and they were nice and plump. I put most of the 1-pound order into my bioreactor, and the rest to supplement the population in my VermiFlow bin. Thanks Scott, great performance!

Scott was so good to work with, and was gracious to allow me to stop by his worm farm to pick up our red wigglers. He even brought his family to our library's Welcome the Worms event the next day. Scott is extremely knowledgeable about these little wiggling friends, and gave me a ton of advice about setting up our compost bin. It's a month later and they're doing well! Hungry Worms is highly recommended!

Customer photo review of Red Wigglers Composting Worms

I have purchased from 3 other online vendors and one local. 2 were DOA and one came but there maybe 2-3 live worms. I bought from Hungry Worms and they came fresh, alive and bountiful. I have a tumbler composter and a dozen plus individual composter hacks for my raised beds. I had plenty of worms to work with. I purchased 250 and it did the trick. I highly recommend buying from Hungry Worms. Shipment came quick and I’m happy. Thank you!!! for being my worm go to.

Customer photo review of Red Wigglers Composting Worms

I've never ordered worms before, but as part of a grant that my library was awarded, placed an order for a half pound of red wigglers. When there were issues with the redemption code, I called and immediately had assistance to place my order. Great service! HungryWorms definitely knows their shipping dates and when to expect the worms! The worms came in a small black pouch, well-sealed, within the cardboard mailing box. Inside, the soil was a little bit dry which was to be expected, but the worms perked right up with a spritz of water. Two weeks later, they appear to be doing well in their new environs. Great service, very knowledgeable about not only worms but how to run a business and provide smooth transactions. A+
