Why Choose the African Nightcrawler?

1. Rapid Vermicomposting Potential

The African Nightcrawler is the Hungriest of all Hungry Worms. Pound for pound, these massive worms eat 1.5-3x times faster than red wigglers - which means you get 1.5-3x more worm castings in the same amount of time.

2. Worm Casting Quality

In addition to more quantity, the quality of their castings is admirable too. Besides being larger, and more visually appealing, studies have found that African Nightcrawler castings contain more nutrients than other worms when given the same feedstock.

3. Rapid Reproduction Rates

The African Nightcrawler lays about 1.6 cocoons per day, with an average of 2.7 babies per cocoon. Although this is on par with red wigglers, the incubation time of their cocoons is faster, and each worm can reach sexual maturity quicker (about 40 days), which means their reproductive power is slightly stronger than Eisenia Fetida.

4. Size and Potential for Bait and Axolotl Feed

African Nightcrawlers can reach massize sizes. When stretched out, a single worm can be over 12 inches long. I personally do not fish, but I hear that they can be used as a good worm for bait due to their size, and they don't need to be refrigerated. They can be fed to axolotls without the axolotl having to taste the foul chemicals that Eisenia Fetida releases when stressed.

Caring for African Nightcrawlers Basics

1. Temperature Requirements

The main consideration for utilizing African Nightcrawlers is their intolerance for cold temperatures. These guys are native to West Africa, and are acclimated to warm tropical weather. Temperatures below 50°F are lethal to them, between 70°F to 80°F is ideal, and above 86°F is lethal.

2. Food Preferences

These guys seem to have an affinity for high carbon foods, especially cardboard. Your amazon shipping boxes hate to see these guys coming! These are also the only worms I've ever seen begin to wander out of the bin because of hunger. Keep them well fed!

3. Space Requirements

As nightcrawlers, these worms do like a bit more space to move. Choose a bin that's at least 6-8 inches deep with a total volume of 1 gallon for every 100 worms. African Nightcrawlers are slightly more prone to wander than other worms. Keep that in mind when picking and placing your worm bin.
