Learn About The Red Wiggler

Not all worms are created equal. With over 7,000 species worldwide, only one stands out as the champion of composting: the Red Wiggler (Eisenia fetida and Eisenia andrei).

Unlike your typical earthworm, Red Wigglers thrive in the top layer of soil, living in mostly organic matter rather than in actual soil. This is what makes them perfect for a composting system.

Constantly eating and reproducing, they can consume half their weight in food scraps every day and double their population in just 90 days—turning waste into powerful fertilizer at incredible speed.

The real magic is in their castings. Worm castings are nature’s ultimate plant booster: improving soil structure, water retention, and disease resistance, while delivering balanced nutrition in a safe, pH-neutral form that won’t burn roots. Plus, each gram teems with over a million beneficial microbes, giving your plants the healthiest start possible.

With the right care, your Red Wigglers will stay in an endless cycle of eating, breeding, and producing the richest compost on Earth.

What Can Red Wigglers Eat?

Worms love fruit and vegetable waste, coffee grounds, paper and cardboard waste, eggshells, and manures.

Avoid anything excessively spicy, oily, greasy, and meat and dairy products.

How Fast Do Red Wigglers Reproduce?

Its fast! In ideal conditions each week a worm can lay 3 cocoons with 3 worms in each cocoon. Ideal conditions can be hard to maintain, so its more realistic to expect that they double their population every couple months. Learn more here.

How Many Worms Should I Start With?

This is really up to you, but if you're just starting out for the first time I'd recommend between a half pound and 2 pounds at most.

Is It Important For My Worm Herd To Be Pure?

Mixed species in a worm bin means that worms will have a harder time finding a suitable mate and your colony will grow more slowly.

Additionally, red wigglers are generally accepted as the best species to use, so other species may inhibit your composting efficiency.

Worms won't be harmed co-existing with other worms, but if efficiency is your priority, purity is best.
How Many Worms Are In A Pound?
This depends on the average weight of each worm. We mostly sell mature and plump worms, so you might receive anywhere from 800-1200 worms.
When Can I Harvest the Worm Castings?
If you're just starting a bin, it will likely be 2-3 months before you can first get castings out of it.

This can be faster or slower depending on what you are feeding them. Material that has already decomposed some will be consumed quicker.
Can I Add Red Wigglers to My Garden?
How Big Do They Grow?
Red Wigglers are not designed to get big like nightcrawlers. Larger Red Wigglers will only be 2-3 inches long, close to the thickness of a pencil, and weigh around 0.6-0.8 grams.
Can Red Wigglers Survive Winter?
Yes! If they have enough insulation, such as living in a large compost heap, they will survive winter.

If it gets too cold and the worms do die, their cocoons can survive harder frosts and will hatch the following spring.
